WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PDF-e, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

                      WHEREAS, Clarence Coleman, was born on December 23, 1925, in Shellman, Georgia and received his early education in the Brevard County school system in Florida; and

 

                     WHEREAS, Clarence Coleman having to work at an early age during the depression, Clarence learned to shine shoes as a ten (10) years old, in the Southern state of Florida and this was the beginning of his dream of becoming an entrepreneur; and

 

                     WHEREAS, Clarence Coleman came to Newark, New Jersey in 1946, owned and operated the Penny Arcade on Badger Avenue and in 1957, he opened the shoeshine business, which is still open with pride.

 

                     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

 

                     1. The Municipal Council hereby authorizes the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Renner Avenue and Bergen Street as “Clarence Coleman Way.” 

 

                     2. The official name of the said streets shall remain Renner Avenue and Bergen Street in their entirety.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

This resolution authorizes the renaming of the intersection of Renner Avenue and Bergen Street as “Clarence Coleman Way”, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
