WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PDF-e, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and
WHEREAS, Ruth Carson, was born in Moncks, Corner, South Carolina, on October 19, 1923 and moved to Newark, New Jersey in the 1940’s during the Great Migration being an oppressed poor black woman trying to start a new life in the North; and
WHEREAS, Ruth Carson loved to cook and opened her first and only restaurant Carson’s Luncheonette on Avon Avenue, Newark, New Jersey 07108 and operated the business until the closing in 1978. She was a very well-known resident with strong ties to the community and had a love and passion for the City of Newark; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council hereby authorizes the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of South 18th Street and Avon Avenue as “Ruth Carson Way.”
2. The official name of the said streets shall remain South 18th Street and Avon Avenue in their entirety.

This resolution authorizes the renaming of the intersection of South 18th Street and Avon Avenue as “Ruth Carson Way”, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
