WHEREAS, lupus (SLE) is an inflammatory disease caused when the immune system attacks its own tissues, the disease can affect the joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart, and lungs; it is an unpredictable and misunderstood autoimmune disease that is difficult to diagnose, hard to live with and a challenge to treat; and
WHEREAS, lupus is a chronic and long-term illness that can be debilitating, causing pain and inflammation in any part of the body leading to extended hospital stays, kidney failure, extreme fatigue and a diminished quality of life; there's no cure for lupus, current treatments focus on improving quality of life through controlling symptoms and minimizing flare-ups; and
WHEREAS, over 1.5 million Americans are living with the debilitating disease that affects different people in different ways, for some it can be mild and for others it can be life threating; and
WHEREAS, the Lupus Foundation of America works to improve the quality of life for people affected by lupus through programs of research, education, support and advocacy to find a cure and urges all Newarkers to get involved and help raise awareness about lupus.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVES BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. May 2022 is declared “Lupus Awareness Month.”
