WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and
WHEREAS, the esteemed Dr. Eugene Lawton, internationally known evangelist, prolific author and college dean, who was born in St. Petersburg, Florida in 1937, served over six (6) decades as the Minister of the Newark Church of Christ; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Eugene Lawton, baptized at an early age, earned multiple educational degrees, including his Doctor of Ministry from Trinity Seminary in Indiana, and was gifted orally in the words and deeds of Christ and became a commanding voice for salvation and a staunch defender of the gospel of Christ; and
WHEREAS, throughout his life's journey and exemplary "walk toward heaven", Dr. Lawton was a beloved figure amongst the Church of Christ disciples and earned numerous accolades, awards and commendations for his vision, commitment and willingness to give oneself for the eternal good of others.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Clinton Avenue and 14th Street as "Dr. Eugene Lawton Way".
