The New Jersey Devils and United Airlines would like to donate (225) pairs of ice skates to the City of Newark to make skating at the Ironbound Rink more accessible to Newark residents and to update and improve the Skate Kiosk. These skates are new, manufactured by Bauer, and come in a variety of sizes. The skates have a value of approximately $12,000.00.

WHEREAS, United Airlines, 1 Newark Airport, Newark, New Jersey 07114 and the New Jersey Devils, 25 Lafayette Street, Newark, New Jersey 07102, would like to donate (225) pair of ice skates to the City of Newark (the “City”) to make skating at the Ironbound Rink more accessible to Newark residents. These skates are new, manufactured by Bauer, and come in a variety of sizes. The skates have a value of approximately Twelve Thousand Dollars and Zero Cents ($12,000.00); and
WHEREAS, United Airlines and the New Jersey Devils, as part of this donation would like to update and improve the skate kiosk (a.k.a “Skate Room” located at the Sharpe James Ken Gibson Recreation Center) by placing a vinyl overlay on the wall and adding an overhang (images of the current skate room and the proposed improvement are attached); and
WHEREAS, the Acting Director of the Department of Recreation, Cultural Affairs and Senior Services (the “Department”) desires to accept the gift of the skates and vinyl overlay and acknowledge the donation by way of placement of United Airlines and New Jersey Devils logos on the front of the skate kiosk, alongside the City of Newark seal; and
WHEREAS, the City desires to expand and enrich the recreational opportunities to the residents of Newark and to partner with United Airlines and the New Jersey Devils, by creating opportunities for all Newark residents, especially the City’s youth, and improving the environment of the ice rink with the upgrade to the skate room; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to Local Public Contracts Law, N.J.S.A. 40A:5-29, a local unit is authorized and empowered to accept bequests, legacies and gifts made to it and is empowered to utilize such bequests, legacies and gifts in the manner set forth in the conditions of the bequest, legacy or gift provided, however, that such bequest, legacy, or gift shall not be put to any use which is inconsistent with the laws of the State of New Jersey and the United States of America.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Mayor of the City of Newark and/or the Director of the Department of Recreation, Cultural Affairs and Senior Services are authorized to accept the gift from United Airlines, 1 Newark Airport, Newark, New Jersey 07114 and the New Jersey Devils, 25 Lafayette Street, Newark, New Jersey 07104 of (225) skates to make skating at the Ironbound Rink more accessible to Newark residents and the vinyl overlay and overhang improvement to the Skate Room/Kiosk at the Sharpe James Ken Gibson Recreation Center.
2. This gift of (225) skates to make skating at the Ironbound Rink more accessible to Newark residents, is valued at approximately Twelve Thousand Dollars and Zero Cents ($12,000.00.)
3. The City acknowledges the generous donation of the skates and vinyl overlay and overhang to the Skate Kiosk through this Resolution and by authorizing the placement of the emblems of United Airlines and the New Jersey Devils on the front of the Kiosk alongside the City of Newark seal.
4. The acceptance of the gift is ratified from approximately April 1, 2022, to the date of adoption of this authorizing Resolution.
5. No municipal funds will be expended for the acceptance of this gift.
STATEMENT
This Resolution ratifies and authorizes the Mayor of the City of Newark and/or the Acting Director of the Department of Recreation, Cultural Affairs and Senior Services to accept the gift from United Airlines and the New Jersey Devils of (225) skates to make skating at the Ironbound Rink more assessable to Newark residents and improvements to the Sharpe James Ken Gibson Recreation Center skate room by placing a vinyl overlay on the wall and adding an overhang. The gift of the skates is valued at approximately $12,000.00. No municipal funds will be expended for the acceptance of this gift.
