WHEREAS, Newark’s Vailsburg High School Vikings opened its doors in 1961 and quickly established itself as an institution of excellence in the molding and shaping of future leaders and outstanding scholars, athletes and educators; and
WHEREAS, the many successful graduates of Vailsburg High School affirmed the guiding principles aptly instilled and ingrained upon the student body by its caring and concerned administrators and educators: Civilization, is fragile and education sustains it, Education is for all and Education is emancipatory; and
WHEREAS, although Vailsburg High School sadly closed its doors in 1988, the contributions and participation in the history and progress of the City of Newark by distinguished Vailsburg High School Vikings alumni should never be forgotten or underestimated; and
WHEREAS, August 13, 2022, celebrates not only the 35th Anniversary of the Vailsburg High School Class of 1987, but also reaffirmed the memory of an educational institution whose alumni forged forward in society to demonstrate the tenacity, grace and wisdom of a true Viking.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY THAT:
1. Saturday, August 13, 2022 is hereby declared Vailsburg Viking Day in the City of Newark.
