WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and
WHEREAS, Roberto Cabañas, Jr., community activist, organizer and mentor, was born in Belleville, New Jersey and raised primarily in the City of Newark, New Jersey; and
WHEREAS, popular, personable and determined, Roberto attended Rutgers-Newark where he majored in Political Science and served as the Student Government President from 2008 through 2010; and
WHEREAS, through his rewarding work as a leader in Rutgers-Newark student governance where he helped shape policy, he engaged in community improvement and service projects and numerous issues vital to the community which inspired him to seek a career in public service and dedicate his life to giving back to the community he loved; and
WHEREAS, upon graduation, Roberto’s career path and lifetime of service included working with several of New Jersey’s and the City of Newark’s largest and most influential non-profit organizations, including La Casa Don Pedro, New Jersey Citizen’s Action and New Jersey Communities United, in addition to, co-founding the Alliance for Newark Public Schools, the grassroots, community-based organization that was the catalyst for the successful fight to return the Newark Public Schools to local control, and garnered him national acclaim.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Highland Avenue and Park Avenue, “Roberto Cabañas, Jr. Plaza.”
2. The official name of said streets shall remain Park Avenue and Parker Street, in its entirety.

This Resolution authorizes the naming of the intersection of Highland Avenue and Park Avenue, “Roberto Cabañas, Jr. Plaza”, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
