This Resolution will amend Resolution 7R8-f adopted on July 13, 2022, which will rename the intersection of Hansbury Avenue and Parkview Terrace from “Honorable Mildred C. Crump Place” to “Honorable Mildred C. Crump Way”.

WHEREAS, Resolution 7R8-f was adopted by the Municipal Council on July 13, 2022, for a ceremonial street designation at the intersection of Hansbury Avenue and Parkview Terrace, renaming it Honorable Mildred C. Crump Place; and
WHEREAS, the Honorable Mildred C. Crump, who was born, raised and educated in Detroit, Michigan, became a trailblazer and promoter of women rights, empowerment and equality throughout her lifetime of enormous achievements and firsts: the first African-American Braille teacher in Detroit, the first African American Braille teacher in the State of New Jersey, the first African American woman to win election as Council Member-at-large and the first African-American woman to hold the position of Newark Municipal Council President; and
WHEREAS, undoubtedly one of the most politically influential and astute politicians in the State of New Jersey, Municipal Council President Mildred C. Crump, was active with numerous city, state and national organizations and civic groups, including the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Board of Directors for the Boys and Girls Club of Newark, Chairman of the Board for the Habitat for Humanity, Newark Branch NAACP Golden Heritage Life Member, founding member of the NJ Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., founder of the Newark Women’s Conference, Inc., in addition to her faithful service with Bethany Baptist Church of Newark; and
WHEREAS, the Honorable Mildred C. Crump received numerous honors, recognitions and accolades including but not limited to, the first African-American female selected as a “Garden State Woman of the Year” recipient by the prestigious Garden State Woman Magazine (2007), the first woman from the City of Newark elected to the National Board of Directors for Women in Municipal Government, the National Board of Directors of the National League of Cities, and one of only eight (8) citizens from the State of New Jersey to have her name inscribed on the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. monument located in Washington, D.C.; and
WHEREAS, this Resolution will modify the original name of the intersection of Hansbury Avenue and Parkview Terrace, to Honorable Mildred C. Crump Way.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council does hereby amend and authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Hansbury Avenue and Parkview Terrace as “Honorable Mildred C. Crump Way”.
2. The official name of the said streets shall remain Hansbury Avenue and Parkview Terrace in its entirety.
