WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

WHEREAS, longtime North Ward community activist, Felix Padilla, Sr. was born March 22, 1953 in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico and at the early age of five (5)  immigrated to Newark, New Jersey; and   

 

WHEREAS, he attended the Newark Public Schools and briefly attended Central High School before returning to his native Puerto Rico to finish his education. It is there he met and married Migdalia, the love of his life and his wife of forty-five (45) years; and

 

WHEREAS, upon their return to Newark, he worked many years at Port Newark and the Gateway Center before joining the Newark Public Schools as a Safety Officer. Raising four (4) children in the inner-city, he became heavily involved in his community and became the ultimate community servant; and

 

WHEREAS, ever-popular and well-respected throughout the North Ward community, he co-founded the Liga Roberto Clemente baseball league, one of the City’s and the State of New Jersey’s most successful baseball programs, where he served as President, Advisor, Coach, Coordinator and Umpire for over thirty-five (35) years. Fiercely proud of his Puerto Rican heritage and culture, he became heavily involved in the Newark Puerto Rican Day Parade Committee, as a key and valued member.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

                     

1.                     The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Carteret Street as “Felix Padilla, Sr. Way”.

 

2.                     The official name of the said streets shall remain Lincoln Avenue and Carteret Street in their entirety.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

This Resolution authorizes the naming of the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Carteret Street as “Felix Padilla, Sr. Way”, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
