WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

WHEREAS, the Reverend Dr. Granville Allen Seward, was born November 22, 1934, in Greenup, Kentucky and accepted Christ at the age of fifteen (15) and became a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. Continuing in the path of service, Reverend Dr. Seward served in both challenging and fulfilling sojourns leading up to Pastor of the Mount Zion Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey in February 1968. The Reverend Dr. Seward received the Doctor of Ministry in 1982 from the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School; and

WHEREAS, the Reverend Dr. Granville Allen Seward was a life trustee of the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School and served as a visiting professor in addition to serving at other theological institutions; and

WHEREAS, through unyielding and unwavering service, Reverend Dr. Seward continued to remain active in supporting ministries and churches beyond retirement and was given the honored recognition of "Pastor Emeritus", until his transition on November 14, 2020.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

1. The Municipal Council hereby authorizes the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Broadway and Kearny Street as "Reverend Dr. Granville Allen Seward Plaza".
