3 CHAPTER 2 OF THE REVISED ORDINANCES OF THE
4 CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, 1966 AS AMENDED AND
5 SUPPLEMENTED. (BY CHANGING THE "COMMITTEE
6 ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN" TO "COMMISSION ON
7 THE STATUS OF WOMEN" AND FURTHER FORMALIZING
THE PARAMETERS OF THE COMMISSION.
of Women and WHEREAS, the City of Newark recognizes the significance in our society, and their changing and developing role;
WHEREAS, by Ordinance 6S&FA (S-1) adopted July 16, 1986 the Municipal Council reestablished the committee on the status of Women; and
WHEREAS, the City recognizes the need to formalize the parameters of the Committee and to upgrade the committee to a commission and more specifically define the responsibilities and objectives of the committee.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT
Section 1. Title 2, Administration, Chapter 2 of the Revised Ordinance of the City of Newark, 1966 is amended and supplemented by adding a new section to read:

The Commission shall pursue the general purpose of improving the status of Women in Newark through coordinating, networking, advocacy, policy recommendations and other methods deemed necessary and appropriate.
Membership of commission; appointment; terms:
(a) The Commission shall consist of 21 members, nine (9) members to be appointed by the Municipal Council and twelve (12) by the Mayor. A majority of the Commission shall be women.

(b) The initial appointments by the Municipal Council shall be as follows:
Three (3) appointments shall be for a term of three (3) year, three (3) for a term of two (2) years and three
(3) for a term of one (1) year.
(c) The initial appointments by the Mayor shall be as follows:
Four (4) shall be for a term of three (3) years, four
(4) for a term of two (2) years and four (4) for a term of one (1) year.
(d) All subsequent appointments shall be for a term of three (3) years for the unexpired term.
Officers of the Commission
There shall be a chairperson initially appointed by the Mayor for a term of two (2) years. The remaining officers vice-chairperson, secretary and treasurer, shall be selected by the Commission.
Commission Meetings
The Commission shall meet at least four (4) times per year.
