WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-e, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

WHEREAS,  Aristide Suarez, originally from Orocovis, Puerto Rico, came to the City of Newark in the late 1950’s to achieve his American dream; and  

 

WHEREAS, during the ensuing years, he worked diligently as a busboy and carpenter and accomplished that dream when he purchased his first home in the Newark’s North Ward and shortly thereafter became a business owner as the proprietor of the Suarez Pool Room; and

 

WHEREAS, “Papi”, as he was affectionately known by many, became a highly successful businessman and respected community leader. In 1979, he purchased the popular and iconic La Roca Night Club, located at 248-250 Park Avenue, and used his success to contribute heavily to the Hispanic community, serving proudly as one of its unelected leaders, not only providing financial assistance, work and housing for those in need, but also guidance, inspiration, mentorship, and a heavy dosage of love; and

 

WHEREAS, during the 1990’s he served proudly as a Board-Member and Treasurer of the Puerto Rican Statewide Parade of New Jersey, in addition to serving as a Board-Member of the Bar Owners Association.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

                     

1.                     The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Park Avenue and North 5th Street as Aristide Suarez Way.

 

2.                     The official name of the said streets shall remain Park Avenue and North 5th Street in their entirety.
